Women's History Month On WCLK

Feb 28, 2013

March is Women's History Month, and WCLK will acknowledge this with a series of vignettes about incredible women throughout the modern era.

Each day throughout March, throughout the day, you will hear about great women including Fannie Lou Hamer, Dorothy Height, Shirley Chisolm, Roslyn Carter, Whoopie Goldberg and others.

These vignettes are made possible by The Georgia Coalition of Black Women, supporting strong women and supporting WCLK.  The vignettes are hosted by Tavis Smiley.

Captivating jazz vocalist and six-time Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon celebrates Lena Horne in an evening of song and story set against the backdrop of Lena Horne’s 92-year life and legacy. The recipient of numerous international honors, Freelon has earned a global fan base for her performances and recordings.  Freelon is at the Ferst Center at Georgia Tech Saturday night, February 23 at 8pm.

George Duke and Gerald Albright will be in ATL at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on April 3 for WCLK's 39th Anniversary Benefit Concert.  Duke himself called in this week to catch up with Jamal Ahmad during The S.O.U.L. of Jazz.  It was a meeting of like minds, as the conversation covered a whole lot of funk, among other things.

Fulton Focus is WCLK's Monthly look at events and initiatives of our home county, and is a public affairs partnership between WCLK and Fulton County Government.  It airs each third Saturday morning at 7:30am, just before Tavis.

This month's program includes Tax Commissioner Dr. Arthur Ferdinand with a discussion about new Ad Valorem Tax rules, which will effect everyone purchasing a car statewide.

Ike Stubblefield will be joining Nicole Sweeney for Friday Jazz At The High Museum Friday, February 15 at 5pm.  Keyboardist Stubblefield has played on everything from Motown to Eric Clapton, with many stops in between.  He's a six time Grammy winner, based in Atlanta for over a decade now.  He'll be appearing with his trio Friday, with maybe some special guests dropping by.

He joined Nicole during her show Wednesday to talk Friday Jazz At The High, and what he's been up to.  You can listen to that audio by clicking on the audiofile below.

Fill A Shoebox and Help the Homeless

It’s amazing how much a simple note or gift of encouragement can mean to individuals who are in need.   For the second year,Jazz 91.9 WCLK in partnership with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, encourages individuals to join in on creating personal care packages for Atlanta area homeless women and children during the 2013 United Way Shoebox Project.

Victor Goines is one of Jazz music's most acclaimed and prolific horn players, his work appearing from Lincoln Center to Hollywood soundtracks.  He stopped by The Midday Jazz Swing with Gary Motley, who appeared with him at the Emory University Schwartz Center Friday night.  They chatted with Nicole Sweeney and caught WCLK listeners up with what they'll be doing at their performance.

Atlanta is a second home for Goines, and tonight's jam session should delight and challenge the serious jazz fans in attendance.

Blue Note Records

News that jazz-fusion legend Donald Byrd had passed went through the media with a shiver yesterday, with record labels confirming by late afternoon that Byrd was gone.  Jazz 91.9 WCLK plays Donald Byrd, always has.  You can expect to hear Donald Byrd closely in the days ahead on the station.  His memory will live forever on The Jazz of The City.

Here are a couple of stories about Byrd from The Guardian and Pitchfork.

Jesse Fischer and Soul Cycle have become an Atlanta favorite in recent years.  In advance of his Saturday night performance at Apache Cafe, Jesse called Nicole Sweeney from the road to talk about his records, the performance, and his appreciation of WCLK.  Saturday night's performance will be hosted by WCLK's S.O.U.L. of Jazz Host Jamal Ahmad.
