Black History Month Programming On 91.9 WCLK
WCLK observes Black History month on the air throughout February with daily vignettes and weekly long-form programs bringing you uplifting and memorable people and events depicting the African American journey in America. Working with our friends at the African American Public Radio Consortium/AAPRC and NPR, each day you will hear vignettes about a wide variety of black men and women who have made important differences in our history and culture. Subjects include Maynard Jackson, Joseph Lowery, Muhammad Ali, Mahalia Jackson, Jean Michel Basquiet, James Baldwin, Amiri Baraka, H. Rap Brown, Gwendolyn Brooks, Malcom X and others.
On Wednesday and Sunday nights at 7pm we will feature special long form programs as follows:
Wednesday February 3 and Sunday February 7: The Music of the Civil Rights and Black Consciousness Movements is a 2-hour production that weaves together over 60 tunes, with a narrative of events, intermittent voice clips of history makers and the late Columbia University historian Josef Sorett. Host Esther Armah is an award winning radio host and international journalist and appears on MSNBC, ARISE TV, GRITtv and BET. She is the former host of WBAI’s WakeUp Call in New York. Born in London, Esther brings fresh vitality to the show’s narration.
Wednesday February 10 and Sunday February 14, 7pm: Feeling Good-The Nina Simone Story: Told by her daughter, vocalist Lisa Simone Kelly, Feeling Good: The Nina Simone Story is a touching, intimate look at life, work and genius of jazz composer, pianist, vocalist and civil rights activist Nina Simone.
Wednesday February 17 and Sunday February 21, 7pm: A Man Like Curtis: Curtis Mayfield, hosted by Lenny Kravitz.
Wednesday February 24 and Sunday February 28, 7pm: Where is the Love: The Donny Hathaway Story,
hosted by Roberta Flack, and Stubborn Kinda Fella: Remembering Marvin Gaye, hosted by Smokey Robinson.
