Feb 14: Michael Henderson, Jean Carne In Valentine Love Concert

Jazz 91.9 WCLK welcomes the Valentine Love concert to the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State, February 14 featuring Bassist and Vocalist, Michael Henderson along with the Dramatics Vocalist, Jean Carne.  Michael Henderson is best known for his bass playing with Mile Davis in the early '70s as well as R&B/Soul hits such as Valentine Love (for which the concert is themed) and You Are My Starship (recorded with Norman Connors).   Many of his bass riffs have inspired players seeking the fat, deep grooves of the Motown sound.   His bass riffs, from such hits as "Valentine Love" and "You Are My Starship," have been sampled by the likes of Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J.   Henderson's songs have been sampled and/or covered by Jay Z, Eminem and projects by the late Notorious BIG, the late Wayman Tisdale and Sugar Ray (among others).

Atlanta native Jean Carne became a household name as a featured vocalist with mega-group Earth, Wind & Fire as well as work with Norman Connors and Michael Henderson.  Signed to Philly International Records in the mid-70s, Jean’s collaborations with Founders and Producers, Kenny Gamble  and Leon Huff, produced the hits Free Love, Don’t Let It Go to Your Head, a cover of the Spinner’s hit, Love Don’t Love Nobody and the smooth and halting late '70s hit, My Love Don't Come Easy.  Following years of performing in the UK and Europe (including the London Jazz Café), Carne’s disco single Was That All It Was?  was featured in  the 2009 Academy Award-nominated film Precious.

In the Rain and Whatcha See (Is Whatcha Get) are two monster hits that are the signature songs connected to The Dramatics. This Detroit group recorded some of the most memorable hits of the' 70s and '80s, including Thank You for Your Love, Hey You Get Off My Mountain and an elegant cover of Billy Paul’s Me & Mrs. Jones. The group was officially inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame in 2013.
