George Cables Featured On Jazz Tones

HighNote Records

Sunday, November 13 at 3:00 p.m. on Jazz Tones on Jazz 91.9 WCLK,  I will feature the music of George Cables.  In the 1970's and 1980's George Cables was the pianist of choice for Saxophonists Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper. Cables also recorded with Jazz stars Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson and Frank Morgan. He has absorbed a variety of styles, sounds and rhythms and incorporated them into his performances. At 18, Cables formed the Jazz Samaritans with Steve Grossman and Billy Cobham. He also gained recognition with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Sonny Rollins in 1969 and with Joe  Henderson from 1969 to 1971. His new album The George Cables Songbook on Highnote Records exhibits his abilities as a composer and pianist. Cables' student and vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles has written lyrics for a number of Cables numbers and she appears on the album to deliver them with a real sense of swing. Featured artists include Easiest Essiet on bass, Victor Lewis on drums, Craig Handy on saxophones and flute and Percussionist Steve Kroon.
