Insights - Nate Smith On Jazz Tones Sunday

Johnalynn Holland
Nate Smith

Sunday, March 12 on Jazz Tones, 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Jazz 91.9 WCLK , I will interview Nate Smith -- drummer, composer and producer.   Smith, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, will share insights into his recent release on Water Baby Music, Kinfolk: Postcards From Everywhere.  According to Smith "In conceiving this project, I wanted to focus on creating the material with very few ingredients; just improvising at the drums or piano singing ideas into a voice recorder, focusing primarily on rhythm and melody. I want to see what other ingredients the players or singers would bring to the material. I am interested in a true band sound." Smith has been devoted to music since age 11, citing such early influences as Earth, Wind and Fire and Quincy Jones, along with other leading Funk and Rock artists.  He studied music at James Madison University and has performed at the International Association of Jazz Educators in Atlanta, where legendary Jazz Songstress Betty Carter invited him to join her esteemed Jazz Ahead program.  Smith has has produced Jazz Ahead program alumni such as: Cyrus Chestnut, Jason Moran and Jacky Terrason.  Smith performed with Carter at the Blue Note Club in New York City and has been featured on BET's Jazz Central and CBS Sunday Morning. He served on the faculty of Betty Carter Jazz Ahead at The Kennedy Center in 2013 and 2014;  and, composed scores for several television documentaries for both the Discovery Channel and the Learning Channel.
