The Local Take Talks Men's Mental Health With Dr. John Wayne Wilson

As part of The Local Take's ongoing conversation on men and health we speak with Dr. John Wayne Wilson about mental health.   Dr. Wilson is a licensed professional counselor who operates Completely Psyched, a Decatur, GA  mental health practice.  He will also participate in the upcoming Local Take Men's Community Health Forum on Saturday, June 25 at Northlake Mall, 4800 Briarcliff Rd, NE, Atlanta, GA 30345 from 2:00 p.m. until  6:00 p.m.

Wilson explains to our listeners that the it is more difficult for men in the African American community to ask for help with mental challenges. Our cultural definition of how men should act limits their ability to express their humanity.  This practice begins with boys. We tell them to "suck it up" or to "man up" when they attempt to express their grief, their pain or happiness.  Dr. Wilson and I discuss solutions that families can offer to the young men in our community.
