National Transgender Day Of Remembrance

Tracee McDaniel

This week on The Local Take with talk with activist Tracee McDaniel about the Trangender National Day of Remembrance which took place November 20, and the challenges faced by transgender women of color.

The National Coalition of Anti-Violence reports that in 2015, 23 transgender people were murdered and 20 of those were Black and Latina transgender women. We discuss the cultural norms in our community that makes it especially difficult when men transition to women.

I asked Tracee how families coming together for the holiday season can welcome gender non-conforming members without disrespecting their choice to live their authentic life. She goes on to explain the biggest challenges facing this community which include discrimination in employment and housing.

Ms. McDaniel shared with us her story of growing up in South Carolina rebelling from her mom and moving across the country to escape a bad relationship before settling down in Atlanta with her spouse, proving that her story is similar to many American girls.
