On the Saturday, June 18 edition of The Local Take we talk about the Zika virus with Darnisha Harrison CEO of Ennaid Therapeutics based in Alpharetta, GA.
Ms. Harrison shares with us some of the reasons that mosquito borne viruses are on the rise.
She provides us with recommendations from the World Health Organization to combat Zika along with the symptoms. She also explains that many of those who contract the virus may not experience any symptoms, they may think that they have a bad summer cold.
Darnisha Harrison updates us on how Zika is being transmitted included via sexual activity with an infected partner. She explains that the virus remains active for six months even after the symptoms have gone away. She also shares with us updates on the challenges for pregnant women and their children who are born with microcephaly.
Currently in Georgia all reports of Zika have been from people who have traveled to endemic areas in South America and US territories including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Ms. Harrison shares her background as a scientist and how her company Ennaid Therapeutics is re-purposing proven scientific research to fast track development of new pharmaceuticals for the prevention and treatment of mosquito born viruses.
