In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,  Jazz 91.9 WCLK will air special coverage of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service on Monday, January 16.   Beginning at 10:00 a.m. we will feature a simulcast of Fox 5 Atlanta, Martin Luther King, Jr. 49th Annual Commemorative Service coverage, live from the Horizon Sanctuary of Ebenezer Baptist Church.   This year's keynote speaker will be Father Michael Pfleger.   U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders will deliver a special tribute.

This week on The Local Take we speak with Toni Holmes from LifeSouth Community Blood Centers.

She shares with us why the need for blood donations goes up during and after holiday periods. Additionally she explains why blood types are matched to recipients and that O negative is the universal donor and they are currently running short.

Join me Saturday, January 7 at 7:00 a.m. on The Local Take on Jazz 91.9 WCLK. We sent out a clarion call for artists in our community to share their response to the New Year.   Fahamu Pecou, Alfred Conteh and Sheila Pree Bright joined us in the studio.

These fine artists share with us their response to the many challenges facing our communities today.

I spoke with Dr. Tabia Henry Akintobi from the Morehouse School of Medicine about a new initiative to provide corner neighborhood stores with fruits and vegetables.

Dr. Akintobi explains that the program is just starting and two stores have received the fresh fruits and vegetables to sell. The program will expand to over 10 corner stores. The initiative began with community input about providing the items that the community has expressed an interest in having and purchasing in their neighborhood.

WCLK would like to wish all of our listeners a happy holiday season. But for many people, this time of year is marked by a major case of the holiday blues. Join us Saturday morning December 31 at 7:30 for Dr. Judi The People’s Advocate as we talk about it. Judi Crocker Billingsley is joined by Dr. Joi G. Showell from the Whitney M. Young, Jr. School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University. They’ll offer you strategies to cope if you suffer from depression and anxieties around the holidays. That’s Dr.
