Join me for Jazz Tones on WCLK Sunday, April 22 at 3:00 p.m. as I feature a rare opportunity to interview Dr. Lonnie Smith - organist, composer, arranger and vocalist. He is a native of Buffalo, New York, and is considered a living legend icon.
National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master, Dr. Lonnie Smith releases his second record on Blue Note, the label he made his name on in the 1960s on a series of sides with Lou Donaldson and then on his own. All In My Mind is a live set, featuring covers and original compositions from the Hammond B-3 Master.
Dr. Lonnie Smith is the ranking Jazz maestro of the Hammond B3 Organ, in particular since the loss of the great Jimmy Smith in 2005. Dr. Lonnie Smith returns with his first release on Blue Note in 45 years, Evolution. In his first go-round on Blue Note he cut sides with the great sax man Lou Donaldson, among others.
Those of you who made it to last week's Friday Jazz At The High event with Ike Stubblefield know the power of the mighty Hammond B-3 organ. You won't want to miss JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater from NPR this weekend on WCLK. Show will air at 6:00am Saturday and 7pm Sunday on Atlanta's Jazz Station.
This week's performance features Smith and his trio live at the Kennedy Center Jazz Club in Washington, D.C.
