2017 has been a good year for John Coltrane fans. First, the John Scheinfeld film Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary revealed his life and music to new audiences (which WCLK screened May 2017 at Midtown Arts Cinemas as a member engagement activity). Now, Rhino Records is re-releasing a number of Coltrane's Atlantic Records-era releases.
A complete box set preceded this compilation. The set is a compelling collection that showcases some of Coltrane's most accessible music, recorded between 1959 and 1961, as he moved from legendary sideman to bandleader. You can hear cuts from Trane: The Atlantic Years at various times on Jazz 91.9 WCLK in particular during Serenade To The City from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.
