London's Jacob Collier is a 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer who's video mash-ups of classic soul songs became viral videos.  This digital sharing led to collaborations with Quincy Jones on live and recorded projects.  Jazz 91.9 WCLK listeners may best know Jacob from his work with Snarky Puppy.  In My Room is his debut on Membran Entertainment Group.  At his best he reminds me of Sly Stone, an artist who blends styles to create an entirely new sound.

Aaron Neville shows no sign of losing his vocal or musical edge at age 75.  His new Tell It Records release Apache comes following several releases in recent years paying homage to formative music from his past, including records taking in Soul, Gospel and, early R&B and Doo-Wop Classics.  Apache stakes out a more contemporary sound and features Neville's original songs about love, life, longing and being nice to your mom. Its tenor and tone evokes some of his great mid-period work with The Neville Brothers.

New Music: Journey To The Heart By Keiko Matsui

Pianist and Composer, Keiko Matsui celebrates 30 years of recordings with her new release on Shanachie Entertainment, Journey To The Heart. This record has a more acoustic sound than previous releases, and includes a strong Cuban influences with Bassist Carlitos Del Puerto and Drummer Jimmy Branly. You can hear cuts from Journey To The Heart at various times on  Jazz 91.9 WCLK in particular during Serenade To The City, Monday through Friday from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.

Jazz 91.9 WCLK remembers the wide-ranging music of harmonica great Toots Thielemans, who passed away Monday, August 22 at the age of 94.  His was a singular talent on the harmonica which was not obviously a Jazz instrument.  Thielemans made his mark with a chromatic harmonica played in the style of his late 1940s inspirations, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.  He's best known to millions around the world for his work in major film soundtracks and television in the 1960s - 70s, in particular the themes and soundtracks to Midnight Cowboy and Sesame Street.

New Music: The Way We Play By Marquis Hill

Twenty nine year old Chicago trumpet player Marquis Hill pays homage to Jazz standards on his new Concord Jazz release The Way We Play. Hill won the 2014 Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition, and you can see why as you listen to this record's modern takes on songs played by all of the Jazz icons who have gone before.  Hill's ensemble includes:  Alto Saxophonist Christopher McBride; Vibraphonist Justin Thomas; Drummer Makaya McCraven; and, Bassist Joshua Ramos.
