Since 1979 Andy Narell has been playing steel pans in the Jazz Milieu.  Among many stops along the way, Narell played for a stint with Bela Fleck and The Flecktones. His latest record  from Listen 2 Entertainment Group is called DIS 1. 4. RAF and features Janysett McPherson on piano, Thierry Fanfant on bass, Inor Sotolongo on congas and percussion, and Gregory Louis on drums.  You can hear cuts from DIS 1. 4. RAF on Jazz 91.9 WCLK at various times in particular during Serenade To The City, Monday through Friday from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.

Sony Pictures Classics

Frank Zappa’s contribution to the world of Jazz is immense. It was through Frank Zappa that the world discovered Pianist George Duke, Violinist Jean Luc Ponty and Saxophonist Ian Underwood among others. In conjunction with Sony Pictures Classics movie release of Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words, we'll take a longer look at his lasting legacy during  Serenade To The City on Jazz 91.9 WCLK, Saturday, July 30 at 1:00 a.m.   The showcase will also include commentary from Zappa's many collaborators about his cultural impact.

New Music: Clockwork By Victor Gould

Fresh Sounds Records

Up and coming Pianist Victor Gould did his time at Berklee and the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz.  He's worked as sideman with such straight-ahead figures as Wallace Roney, Ralph Peterson, Donald Harrison, Louis Hayes and others.  On his debut record on Fresh Sounds Records, Clockwork, Gould plays with a combo including flute, violin, viola and cello, along with standard bass-dum-horn configurations. All cuts on the album are Gould's compositions except for a cover of Wayne Shorter's The Return.

Russ Freeman's band The Rippingtons has been defining and crossing musical boundries in Jazz since their founding in 1985.   Jazz 91.9 WCLK has featured the music of  The Rippingtons nearly every step of the way.   We are featuring their new release on Peak called True Stories. Saxophonist Kim Waters has helped define Smooth Jazz in over 20 years of touring and performing.  We're happy to have him as an Atlanta resident when he's not on tour. His new release on Shanachie is called Rhythm and Romance, and includes interpretations of songs from Janet Jackson, DeBarge and Sam Smith. You can hear cuts from Rhythm and Romance throughout the day on Jazz 91.9 WCLK in particular during Serenade To The City, Monday through Friday from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.
