Jul 29 Tuesday
On Tuesday, July 29th at 6:00pm the Toni Morrison Society and the Auburn Avenue Research Library will host a book conversation with Dana Williams and acclaimed novelist Tayari Jones. Dana Williams has just completed a book, Toni at Random, that details Morrison's career as a senior editor at Random House for 20 years and one of the only Black editors in this senior position. Morrison was the in-house editor for Angela Davis, Toni Cade Bambara, Muhammad Ali, Gayle Jones and many others. We know Toni Morrison as an acclaimed novelist, this discussion will chronicle her impressive career as an editor. This should be an exciting and insightful conversation that you will not want to miss with two writers who are champions of Morrison's work. If you live in or will be visiting the Atlanta area on July 29th, please plan to attend the event from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at the Auburn Avenue Library: 101 Auburn Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30303. A bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s muse—told in her own voice, with live music and intimate conversation.
The Dark Lady is a witty and sensual duet that reclaims the story of a fascinating woman who was almost lost to history—Emilia Bassano. Through her eyes, this thrilling love story helps us both understand and challenge our love of Shakespeare. Emilia was multiracial and multilingual, and the first Englishwoman to publish her own poetry. And she may also be the answer to a 400-year-old mystery—just who was the “Dark Lady” that Shakespeare spoke of with such passion in his sonnets?

Ever wonder about the history of the punchcard?
The punchcard exhibit starts with a Jacquard Loom, one of the earliest uses of punched cards, which helped to make woven fabric more affordable. Herman Hollerith’s invention of electromechanical processing of cards tabulated data for the 1890 census. The IBM family of punch card machines was used for data processing and record-keeping across many industries and academia. Punched cards were even used for matchmaking at the University of Iowa in 1963!
Come learn more about this history and punch your own souvenir card on an original IBM 029 to take home during the demo.
