JaQuitta Williams discussed diet and cancer during our monthly look at cancer-related health issues on Your Health Connection. Our informative guest was Registered Dietician Marisa Moore.
Does what you eat make it more likely you will get cancer? Can you choose to eat in ways that minimize certain cancers? What about diet when you are a cancer survivor? We'll take your calls and tweets live as we talk about an issue that is relevant to everyone who eats.
Get on the good foot with Dee Dee Bridgewater and JazzSet Sunday at 7pm on WCLK to hear Dee Alexander and The Evolution Arkestra's live tribute to Jimi Hendrix and James Brown.
by Becca Pulliam
The Jazz Institute of Chicago and the city's Park District teamed up in December 2012 to present this free family concert with Dee Alexander. As we air it on JazzSet a year later, Alexander is just back from performing the show in Poland where, she writes, "everyone was on their feet."
Kiplyn Primus is joined on a special holiday edition of The Local Take by dancer, producer and choreographer Stepp Stewart to talk about Stewart's presentation of "A Soulful Christmas". The production is a heart-warming musical illuminating the magic of the holiday season. It features soulful Christmas songs and Broadway-style choreography. It's an African-American tale that is fun and exciting for all families.
The production features the Chocolettes Dance Troup.
Swiss composer and pianist and two time Soul Train Music Award winner Alex Bugnon hits the Atlanta area with performances Thursday at Acoustix Jazz Restaurant and Lounge, and then Saturday night at Jazzy Brown's in McDonough.
WCLK listeners will have the chance to win passes to both performances.
WCLK mourns the passing of our former Program Director Bobby Jackson, the host of The Roots of Smooth. Jackson wrote, broadcast, lectured and otherwise promoted jazz constantly during his too-short lifetime. WCLK listeners regularly hear Bobby’s voice on Sunday afternoons from 3-4pm on Atlanta’s Jazz Station. We will bring you more information about the future direction of that show as we learn it. In the meanwhile our prayers and good wishes go to his family and loved ones. Jazz in heaven just gained a great emcee.
WCLK Program Director and Serenade To The City Host Aaron Cohen has dropped in a couple of Christmas songs into overnight rotation from New Orleans' own Kermit Ruffins, whose Have A Crazy Cool Christmas covers everyone from Sammy Cahn to Donny Hathaway. If you're digging the gumbo Christmas vibe of this record, you can purchase it from Amazon and support WCLK by clicking below:
WCLK and all of our listeners and members fondly recall the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. Smiley and West devoted their December 7 program to memories of Mandela, including conversations with Ron Dellums, Maxine Waters, and Afre Woodard.
You can listen to that program on demand by clicking here.
Atlanta's historic Southview Cemetery is hosting a wreath-laying event honoring veterans on Saturday, December 14 at noon. Southview Cemetery Association President Wini Watts-Hemphill and Southview Manager Chermaine Axam-Wilkins stopped by WCLK to talk about this event and also talk about Southview, one of Atlanta's enduring African American institutions.
WCLK is there for you every night, every day. In the overnight hours PD Aaron Cohen likes to mix things up and that includes Christmas Music. You'll be hearing some from New York Voices/Let It Snow throughout the holiday season.
