July 16: Sisters By Choice Pink Ribbon 5k

Sisters By Choice is an Atlanta, GA grass roots organization designed to help women in the community take control of their health relative to breast cancer. On The Local Take on Jazz 91.9 WCLK, Saturday, July 9 at 7:00 a.m.,  I'll talk with Dr. Yara Robertson of Sisters By Choice.  She shares with us information about how the organization started as a support group for young cancer survivors and then became so much more.

Dr. Robertson lets us know about the new parameters being recommended for breast health and explains why for African American women the new parameters don't work.  We discuss health disparities and how you can be an advocate for your health.  She also shares with us the new technologies and, treatments for breast cancer and why we cannot be afraid of facing a diagnosis of cancer.

Dr. Robertson tells us about the 12th Annual Pink Ribbon 5k which takes place at Piedmont Park on Saturday, July 16.  The race has grown from a few people at Stone Mountain to a full fledge race that attracts both runners and walkers.  Funds from the races have outfitted a tractor trailer with a mobile mammogram services vehicle.  This innovative design allows Sisters by Choice to provide much needed mammograms to under insured and uninsured Georgians.
