On the Saturday, January 9, 7:00 a.m. edition of The Local Take, we take a look at the Year In Review. I am joined in the Jazz 91.9 WCLK talk studio by Clark Atlanta University Political Science Professor Dr. William Boone and former Fulton County Judge Penny Brown Reynolds. Judge Reynolds is a former prosecutor, speaker and author. She handled cases on the television program, Family Court With Judge Penny between 2008 - 2010.
We discussed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was gutted by our Supreme Court in June of 2015 with their decision in Shelby County vs. Holder.
Our conversation included the "new" Civil Rights Movement being carried out by young leaders of #BlackLivesMatter. Our guests provided their opinions on what can be done to ensure the sustainability of the organization and how it can impact the upcoming election.
I asked our guests their thoughts in advance of President Barack Obama's final State of the Union Address scheduled for Tuesday, January 12. Both shared their hopes for topics and words that our President might use to address the nation.
We also handicapped the 2016 presidential election. Boone and Reynolds gave their thoughts on the candidates for both the Democratic and Republican fields.
We rounded out our conversation with thoughts on Governor Nathan Deal agreeing to accept Syrian refugees, as well as the challenges of gentrification that are making many local neighborhoods unaffordable.
