Azar Lawrence On Jazz Tones With Jay Edwards

Apr 23, 2016

Listen to Jazz Tones on Sunday, April 23 as I talk with Azar Lawrence about his incredible musical journey. Saxophonist Azar Lawrence's early exposure to music was by his mother Ima Jean Lawrence, an educator and classical pianist. As a high school student he began performing with the Horace Tapscott Pan African People's Arkestra. After high school he played with George Cables and Woody Shaw, and he had a regular gig at a Los Angeles club. Azar is a self proclaimed funkateer who  also performed with Ike and Tina Turner. He met Elvin Jones at the age of 20, which  radically changed his musical career. After few years playing with Elvin Jones he joined The McCoy Tyner Band. These priceless years with two-thirds of the classic John Coltrane Quartet made an indelible mark on Azar's life and music.
