Mack Avenue

Join me on Jazz  Tones on Jazz 91.9 WCLK on Sunday November 12, from 3- 7 pm. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to interview Vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant about her recent release Dreams and Daggers(Mack Avenue). The release features Aaron Diehl on piano, Paul Sikivie on double bass, Lawrence Leathers on drums, Catalyst Quartet on strings, and Sullivan Fortner piano. This is Salvant's third album and it shows her developing curosity for the history of  American music and the connections between jazz and other genres.

Jazz 91.9 WCLK listeners know John Beasley well, as keyboardist on sides and tours with Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, George Duke, Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke among others.  He's been through the station more than a time or two.  In recent years he has led a tight big band he calls the MONK'estra, playing and  arranging variations on songs from the master of variation himself Thelonius Monk.

Yellowjackets are one of the enduring Jazz groups of the era, playing together now for over 35 years. They have always straddled the worlds of Straight-Ahead and Contemporary Jazz styles, all the while putting out music that has always found an outlet on Jazz 91.9 WCLK.   Their new release Cohearance, on Mack Avenue Records, reminds the careful listener that they're all that, a great Fusion band and a band that can carry off Coltrane-inflected Swing.
